A straightforward and pleasant walk in the pine forests of the Sierra de Huétor, with some fantastic views of the whole of the Sierra Nevada, which are particularly spectacular with winter snow cover. This walk could be combined with the Cruz de Víznar walk to make a longer circuit.
Level The walk is straightforward – although it has a couple of uphill sections, these are not too steep. The trail is well-marked, and it uses good footpaths and dirt roads.
When to go All year round, but views are best in winter and spring, when the high mountains are capped with snow. Bear in mind, though, that this area could occasionally be above the snow line in winter.
Water None available on the route.
Location: Sierra de Huétor
The walk starts from the Alfaguara picnic area and campsite in the Sierra de Huétor natural park, near the towns of Víznar and Alfácar.
By Car: From Granada, take the A-92 towards Almeria and Guadix. Take exit 250 (for Víznar). Turn left and cross the motorway, then turn left towards Alfacar, and go straight on at the roundabout. When you get to a crossroads in the village with a bus stop on your left, turn left (following a sign for “Kiosco Bar”). Keep going straight on for about 3km, passing the Parque García Lorca on your right. Take the right fork (marked Sierra de Alfaguara). After about another 4km, turn right (marked Campamento Alfaguara and Area Recreativa Alfaguara). Park in the car park beside the campsite and café-bar.
By Bus: This walk is not easily accessible by bus.
