Great family walk with a lovely meadow where you can stop for a picnic half way round. Stone benches with fantastic views mean that there are plenty of places where you can stop for breather. Refill your water bottles at the source of the River Darro, one of the two rivers that run through Granada.

For most of the Spanish Civil War, the front between the Republicans and Nationalists ran close to Granada, and so the hills are dotted with the ruins of fortifications and trenches. This short walk takes you through pleasant wooded countryside to a relatively well-preserved Nationalist trench complex, from which there are also great views of the Sierra Nevada.

The Cruz de Viznar (“Viznar Cross”) is planted on a small but prominent hill, just far enough away from the Sierra Nevada to give you amazing views of the whole mountain range. The climb up is steady rather than steep, and the effort it takes to get to the top is richly rewarded. Makes a lovely evening walk, when the soft light brings out the subtle colours of the surrounding mountains.

A straightforward and pleasant walk in the pine forests of the Sierra de Huétor, with some fantastic views of the whole of the Sierra Nevada, which are particularly spectacular with winter snow cover. This walk could be combined with the Cruz de Víznar walk to make a longer circuit.
