List of walks: Sulayr
The Vereda de la Estrella is one of the classic hikes of the Sierra Nevada. The scenery in this deep valley is stunning, and the Vereda de la Estrella path, originally built to access the Estrella copper mine, is a feat of engineering. Above the gorge, there are views of the rugged north faces of the three highest peaks in the mountain range – Mulhacén, Veleta and Alcazaba. A long walk, but well worth the effort. If the full walk seems too much, it’s still worth considering going part way along the path. The path is well-marked and very easy to follow. Continue reading21 km 6 hours 650 m Medium Downloads:
This is the most accessible leg of the Sulayr long-distance walking route, as it runs between two of the most popular villages in the Alpujarras, Capileira and Trevélez. As you walk up from Capileira you get some great views of the high mountains, as well as back down to the villages below you. The trail takes you up into the open landscape of the high Sierra Nevada, before eventually bringing you back down to Trevélez, taking in a number of beautiful waterfalls along the way.
This walk winds its way up through a pleasant forest of oaks and pines, before continuing up the ridge of the Loma de San Juan, from which you have panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada. The climb is fairly relentless, and steep in parts, but if you’re reasonably fit and the weather’s good the amazing scenery more than makes up for it! Return via the attractive Cortijo del Hornillo and the lower part of the Vereda de la Estrella. Continue reading16.5 km 5h 30min 1054m Hard Downloads:
This walk follows a relatively untrodden path that winds up through a forest of oak and pine trees, before taking you on to the Cortijo del Hornillo, one of the few summer farms still in use in the high mountains. The location is idyllic, and the views of the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada are incredible, so it’s easy to understand why they come back each year. Return along the lower part of the popular Vereda de la Estrella path, in the beautiful valley below. Continue reading16 km 4h 30min 813m Medium Downloads:
Above the village of Monachil, and below the Sierra Nevada ski station, there is a peaceful area of idyllic farms and pasture land. This walk takes you past a disused hydropower station and a small farm in an incredibly pretty setting, and you’re likely to see lots of grazing cows and goats on your way around. A varied circuit that takes you through the dense forest, orchards and idyllic pastureland of the western Alpujarras. There is welcome shade as you climb up at the start of the walk, but after you reach the highest point of the walk there are lovely views over the Órgiva valley, the Rules reservoir and the hills beyond. If you’re staying in one of the villages in the Poquiera gorge, this is just a very short drive away in the next valley. Continue reading13.5 km 4 hours 544m Medium Downloads:
This route incorporates one of the classic hikes of the Sierra Nevada, the Vereda de la Estrella, but rather than going out and back the same way, it forms a circuit using a higher path on the other side of the valley, giving you a more open view of the rugged north faces of the three highest peaks in the mountain range – Mulhacén, Veleta and Alcazaba. A long walk, but well worth the effort. The scenery in this deep valley is stunning, and the Vereda de la Estrella path, originally built to access the Estrella copper mine, is a feat of engineering. If the full walk seems too much, it’s still worth considering going part way along the main path. Continue reading22.5 km 7 hours 1008m Hard Downloads:
