GR-7 Busquístar – Capileira

This section of the GR-7 long-distance walking path goes through the heart of the Alpujarras. Make your way through the orchards, terraces and open countryside between the picturesque white villages of Busquístar, Pórtugios, Atalbéitar, Pitres, Capilerilla and Capileira. There are plenty of places along the way to stop for a drink or a snack. As you near Capileira you get some spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada.

GR-7 Juviles – Trevélez

This section of the GR-7 long-distance walking path takes you between the picturesque villages of Juviles and Trevélez. The climb up from Juviles is fairly long and steep, but the views of the high mountains get better and better. From the highest point you descend gently through a forest, which opens up into idyllic pastureland shortly before you reach Trevélez. If you have to wait for the bus, you can enjoy a cold drink and sample some of the famous ham in one of Trevélez’s many bars and restaurants.

GR-7 Trevélez – Busquístar

This is one of the most attractive legs of the GR-7 long-distance walking trail, and it is a great place to start exploring the beautiful countryside of the Alpujarras. The walk starts in Trevélez, then takes you to a picturesque waterfall, through a forest of holm oaks and past various crumbling farmhouses, before descending to the pretty village of Busquístar. In spring the gorse and broom come into bloom, producing a sea of bright yellow flowers.

Güéjar Sierra – Jarales Loop

Starting from the top of the village of Güéjar Sierra, this walk takes you up to a narrow ridge between two valleys. From the top of the ridge, you have spectacular views south towards the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada and north towards the Sierra de Huetor. The climb up, which isn’t too steep or long, goes through pleasant scrubland with a mixture of bushes, wild herbs and flowers.

Llano de la Perdiz Loop

This walk explores the Llano de la Perdiz, an area of parkland above the Alhambra in Granada popular with locals for walking, cycling and Sunday picnics. You very soon leave the city behind, replacing it with views across to the Sierra Nevada to the south-east and the Sierra de Huétor to the north. The return part of the circuit offers views down into the Sacramonte valley and the Albaicín quarter of Granada.

Melegís – Murchas

The GR-7 long-distance walking trail links the attractive Lecrín Valley villages of Melegís and Murchas. This walk takes you up from Melegís to Murchas on the GR-7, before returning by a differrent route to make an easy and pleasant circuit. Suitable for people of all ages and levels of fitness.

Picacho Alto

This walk takes you to the top of Picacho Alto (1,776 m) in the Alayos de Dilar, which are a row of jagged mountains made of limestone and dolomite. Although the Alayos are not particularly high, the scenery is amazing and the area feels quite remote. Some sections of the walk are very steep, but you get magnificent views of the city of Granada, the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the surrounding peaks of the Alayos. The final part of the walk takes you down a spectacular ravine.

Pico de Lopera

Get stunning views of the Sierras de Alhama, Tejeda y Almijara Natural Park, as well as of the more distant Sierra Nevada on this easily manageable well-marked trail. Particularly beautiful in winter and spring, when the surrounding peaks are capped in snow.

Poqueira Circuit

For over a thousand years, people have farmed the steep sides of the Poqueira gorge. Today, with its three picturesque white villages clinging to the mountainside, it is the most popular tourist destination in the Alpujarras, and a great base for hiking in the high mountains. Starting in Capileira, Bubión or Pampaneira, this beautiful circular walk first takes you down through all three villages, and then back up the other side of the gorge.
