This walk takes you down into the lush Dúrcal valley and up to the Atalaya de Cónchar watchtower. The landscape and vegetation are very varied: vineyards, fruit orchards, olive groves, cacti, scrubland and the village of Cónchar. From the watchtower you have great views of the Lecrin Valley and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
The Cruz de Viznar (“Viznar Cross”) is planted on a small but prominent hill, just far enough away from the Sierra Nevada to give you amazing views of the whole mountain range. The climb up is steady rather than steep, and the effort it takes to get to the top is richly rewarded. Makes a lovely evening walk, when the soft light brings out the subtle colours of the surrounding mountains.
A straightforward and pleasant walk in the pine forests of the Sierra de Huétor, with some fantastic views of the whole of the Sierra Nevada, which are particularly spectacular with winter snow cover. This walk could be combined with the Cruz de Víznar walk to make a longer circuit.
Above the village of Monachil, and below the Sierra Nevada ski station, there is a peaceful area of idyllic farms and pasture land. This walk takes you past a disused hydropower station and a small farm in an incredibly pretty setting, and you’re likely to see lots of grazing cows and goats on your way around.
As you gradually climb up from Dílar through the pine forest you catch tantalising glimpses of the plain and valleys below, but nothing that prepares you for the stunning, panoramic views that await you when you emerge above the tree line at Cerro de Montellano. A relatively easy walk, in spite of the climb, and suitable for all seasons.
A pleasant walk through pine forests suitable for all seasons. From Cerro de Montellano there are fantastic views of the Sierra Nevada, including Cerro del Caballo (3011m). Also takes in two attractive chapels: Ermita Nueva (the new chapel) and Ermita Vieja (the old).
This section of the GR-7 long-distance walking path goes through the heart of the Alpujarras. Make your way through the orchards, terraces and open countryside between the picturesque white villages of Busquístar, Pórtugios, Atalbéitar, Pitres, Capilerilla and Capileira. There are plenty of places along the way to stop for a drink or a snack. As you near Capileira you get some spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada.
This section of the GR-7 long-distance walking path takes you between the picturesque villages of Juviles and Trevélez. The climb up from Juviles is fairly long and steep, but the views of the high mountains get better and better. From the highest point you descend gently through a forest, which opens up into idyllic pastureland shortly before you reach Trevélez. If you have to wait for the bus, you can enjoy a cold drink and sample some of the famous ham in one of Trevélez’s many bars and restaurants.
This is one of the most attractive legs of the GR-7 long-distance walking trail, and it is a great place to start exploring the beautiful countryside of the Alpujarras. The walk starts in Trevélez, then takes you to a picturesque waterfall, through a forest of holm oaks and past various crumbling farmhouses, before descending to the pretty village of Busquístar. In spring the gorse and broom come into bloom, producing a sea of bright yellow flowers.
