Dúdar loop

Gollizno Route, Moclín

Overlooked by the ruins of a medieval castle perched on the top of a hill, Moclin is a very picturesque village. This popular circuit takes you down into the gorge below the village. In the narrowest part, there are wooden walkways attached the cliff face and a hanging bridge across the fast-flowing river. There is some steep climbing and descending, but you’re rewarded with fabulous views in all directions, including across to the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

GR-7 Busquístar – Capileira

This section of the GR-7 long-distance walking path goes through the heart of the Alpujarras. Make your way through the orchards, terraces and open countryside between the picturesque white villages of Busquístar, Pórtugios, Atalbéitar, Pitres, Capilerilla and Capileira. There are plenty of places along the way to stop for a drink or a snack. As you near Capileira you get some spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada.

GR-7 Juviles – Trevélez

This section of the GR-7 long-distance walking path takes you between the picturesque villages of Juviles and Trevélez. The climb up from Juviles is fairly long and steep, but the views of the high mountains get better and better. From the highest point you descend gently through a forest, which opens up into idyllic pastureland shortly before you reach Trevélez. If you have to wait for the bus, you can enjoy a cold drink and sample some of the famous ham in one of Trevélez’s many bars and restaurants.

GR-7 Trevélez – Busquístar

This is one of the most attractive legs of the GR-7 long-distance walking trail, and it is a great place to start exploring the beautiful countryside of the Alpujarras. The walk starts in Trevélez, then takes you to a picturesque waterfall, through a forest of holm oaks and past various crumbling farmhouses, before descending to the pretty village of Busquístar. In spring the gorse and broom come into bloom, producing a sea of bright yellow flowers.

Güéjar Sierra – Cerro el Calar

It’s a steep walk up from Güéjar Sierra to the civil war trenches on the ridge just below Cerro el Calar, but you are rewarded for your efforts with wonderful views of all of the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada, from Picón de Jerez in the east, to Cerro del Caballo in the west. The route continues up over Cerro el Calar itself before heading back down to Güéjar past lush meadows and some interesting rock formations.

Hoya de la Mora – Veleta

On a clear day, the peak of Veleta offers 360° views of the surrounding mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the Mediterranean and even Africa. In summer and early autumn the ascent is remarkably straightforward for being such a high mountain, and the fresh mountain air at the summit is a welcome relief from the heat at lower altitudes.

Laguna de las Yeguas

This walk starts at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, making use of the ski lifts that are open in summer. As a result, you get a taste of the high mountains without having to walk up thousands of metres! There are great views down to the city of Granada and the surrounding mountains. The walk takes you to some beautiful mountain tarns and meadows where the water bubbles up from the ground, before heading back down through the ski station.

Las Chorreras

This walk starts from Borreguiles, at the top of the cable car. The first part of the walk isn’t particularly attractive, as it goes through part of the ski resort. After that, however, the countryside becomes much prettier, and there are some great views. The last part of the walk takes you down into the Dilar valley. Here there are lots of small streams and some lush meadows that are perfect for a picnic.
